Black Lives Matter
I would be remiss if I did not address the biggest issue worldwide at the moment: BIPOC's right to basic human rights, basic human decency, and life.
I am a cisgender white woman. I will never personally know the struggles of Black people. I do not have to experience the struggles firsthand, however, to understand the systemic problem that exists in the United States and many other countries throughout the world.
I do not have to have brown or black skin to know that being treated as less than human due to nothing more than the color of one's skin is not acceptable.
I do not have to have brown or black skin to know that we live in a nation build on the bodies of Indigenous and Black people.
I do not have to have brown or black skin to know that saying "All Lives Matter" erases the issue at hand, which is that our nation treats Black lives as if they do not matter.
I do not have to have brown or black skin to know that our nation requires a systemic change. Police brutality is real. The for profit prison system is built to take advantage of Black people - the numbers speak for themselves (see resources listed below). Educational opportunities are unequal, based on race and economic status. Black trans people are murdered at an alarming rate in the U.S. The rate at which Black women die in child birth is staggering and unacceptable.
How the United States treats non-white citizens is unacceptable.
The issue with those who do not se what is wrong is one of privilege, lack of empathy, and inherent racism.
This nation is built on racism and built for the privileged elite. We need to change deep down to our core. I do not know what the solution is but I know it starts with listening to BIPOC, receiving their message, and reflecting on their experiences.
If you do not support racial equality, you are racist. This is not a point to be argued. This is an absolute fact.
Black Lives Matter.
Period.
